Weather Roulette, Page 5

Here are excerpts from instructions for runners from that Web site:

  • The American College of Sports Medicine flag system and announcements
along the racecourse inform you of prevailing weather conditions. The flag
colors, posted at aid stations, signal the level of risk weather conditions pose
    for runners.
  • White flag: cold temperatures, below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10
    degrees Celsius); risk of hypothermia.
  • Green flag: temperatures from 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 18
degrees Celsius); humidity below 50 percent; no weather restrictions.
  • Yellow flag: temperatures from 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 22
degrees Celsius); humidity from 50 to 65 percent ; moderate risk of
heat illness that may increase during the race; runners sensitive to heat
should slow their pace or not run.
  • Red flag: temperatures from 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 28
degrees Celsius); humidity above 75 percent [heat index values of 76-88°F and above]; heat illness a possibility; runners sensitive to heat or humidity probably should not run; all runners should slow their pace.
  • Black flag: race has been canceled because of impending dangerous
    weather conditions or disaster.
  • Medical volunteers sanctioned by race officials are permitted to perform
hands-on examinations of runners when medically indicated. This does not
result in automatic disqualification for runners. However, physicians will
request that runners retire from the race if it is determined, from the
physicians' evaluations, that continuing the race would be detrimental to the
    runners' health.
  • In addition to resting, take a short, slow run of about one to two miles (1.5
to 3 kilometers) the day after the race.
  • Avoid competitive races for at least two weeks after the marathon.
  • Learn from the experience you gain in this race, and plan ahead so that you
can improve your performance in future races.
